Kingsville’s Pete Van Wezel won the 47th annual Western Amateur golf tournament Sunday.
Van Wezel shot a three-under 69 at Beach Grove Sunday to edge defending champion David Byrne of Sutton Creek by one shot.
Van Wezel's two-day total of seven-under 136 was one of the lowest scores in the history of the Western Amateur, the oldest men's amateur golf tournament in Windsor and Essex County.
Byrne, who will compete in next week's Canadian amateur along with Tecumseh's Zac Bested at the London Hunt Club and Redtail, had a four-under 68 Sunday and a two-under 69 Saturday at Seven Lakes.
Van Wezel fired a four-under 67 Saturday.
Nathan Komsa of Essex finished third with rounds of 69 and 74 for a 143 total.
In other golf news, Windsor Spitfires president Bob Boughner got a hole-in-one Friday.
Boughner, now an assistant coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets, used a seven-iron to ace the 164-yard 16th hole at Sutton Creek.
The witnesses were Spitfires associate coach D.J. Smith, Doug Hogan and Jamie Dimitroff.
Also at Sutton Creek, Duncan Simmons got a hole-in-one on the eighth hole.
Simmons hit a witching wedge on the 124-yard hole.
Guy Luppino and Marcello Cuzzolino were the witnesses.
Meanwhile, Amherstburg golfer Quinn Vilneff finished tied for third place at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Vilneff, the first-round leader, shot a 73 Sunday to go with his earlier rounds of 67, 75 and 72 (283 total, one-under par).
Defending champion A.J. Crouch of Jacksonville won the title at five-under par.
He made a birdie on the 18th hole to force a playoff, which he won on the third hole against Sam Chun of South Korea.
